While our Burlington, MA Mercedes-Benz showroom is currently closed, members of our sales team are standing by to answer any questions you may have about the luxury models on our lot. As you view our inventory online, you’ll quickly realize that many of them are available with what’s called a 4MATIC® AWD system. If you’re not familiar with what that is, you may wonder, “Are there Mercedes-Benz dealers near me who can explain what Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC® AWD is in terms I can understand?”
Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC® AWD: the Basics
To put it simply, Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC® AWD is the name of an all-wheel drive system that was designed and created by the automaker we proudly represent. Whether you’re driving in inclement weather, you’re stuck in the sand or mud, or you’re rounding a tight corner, the goal of the 4MATIC® AWD system is to provide increased traction when you need it and improve your car’s handling as a result.
While that is the goal of every 4MATIC® AWD system, not all of these AWD systems are the same. In general, 4MATIC® systems fall into two broad categories, variable and permanent. The variable systems switch between two-wheel drive when you’re on the highway to all-wheel drive when conditions warrant a change. Permanent 4MATIC® AWD systems always have all-wheel drive engaged. The permanent systems have a fixed split of torque, meaning power is always sent to all four tires in cars outfitted with this type of system.
In addition to its standard 4MATIC® AWD systems, the Mercedes-Benz brand manufactures performance variants, which include:
- AMG® Performance 4MATIC® Variable All-Wheel Drive
- AMG® Performance 4MATIC®+ Variable All-Wheel Drive
- AMG® Performance 4MATIC® Permanent All-Wheel Drive
